Whether you're an absolute car fiend, or someone who thinks of cars only as a tool to get from A to B, everyone can admire a clean car!
One often neglected area when cleaning a car is the wheels. Wheels, mags, rims, alloys whatever you want to call them, can be home to oil, dirt and salt which in turn can attract rust over time, causing damage to the wheel.
As always... test in a small area first and follow instructions carefully. Bar Keepers Friend is not recommended for painted surfaces so best to avoid on the paintwork, however, it is fine for most metal alloys.
Pro tip: To provide extra protection to your tyres, cover and tape off the parts of your wheels (or paint) you don’t want to come in contact with the product.
IMPORTANT NOTE: These instructions are for the chrome and metal alloys only. For paint-coated, powder coated, matte or chrome plated see further below.
For Everyday Cleaning (light to medium soiling):
We recommend Bar Keepers Friend MORE Spray & Foam for a good general clean. This is a great place to start if you have not used BKF on your wheels before, or for a general, overall clean.
What you'll need:
- Bar Keepers Friend MORE Spray & Foam
- Scrub Daddy or light-grade pad
- Dry cloth (lint free or microfibre)
- Car friendly tape (optional)
Instructions:
(Optional Step): Before you start, tape up and cover any areas you do not want to come into contact with the product.
Step 1: Make sure wheels are cool to the touch prior to cleaning. Test in a small area first, following instructions.
Step 2: Rinse a Scrub Daddy or light-grade pad in lukewarm water.
Step 3: Spray MORE Spray & Foam directly onto the wheel.
Step 4: Scrub in small circles, getting into all the holes and corners.
Step 5: Rinse off thoroughly within one minute of application.
Step 6: Dry with a microfibre or lint-free cloth.

For a Good Clean (medium to heavy soiling):
We recommend the Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser as a great option for tougher stains on chrome and metal alloys.
What you'll need:
- Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser
- Scrub Daddy or light-grade pad
- Dry cloth (lint free)
- Car friendly tape (optional)
Instructions:
(Optional Step): Tape up and cover any areas you do not want to come into contact with the product.
Step 1: Prior to cleaning, check surface is cool to the touch. Then, following the instructions, test in a small area first.
Step 2: Rinse entire surface with water.
Step 3: Dampen a Scrub Daddy or light-grade pad in water.
Step 4: Apply the Soft Cleanser to the Scrub Daddy or cleaning pad.
Step 5: Using small circles, scrub away! Be sure to get in all the nooks and crannies.
Step 6: After no more than one minute of application, rinse thoroughly, making sure to remove all product.
Still not cutting it? You may want to step up to the powdered Cleanser, a step up from the Soft Cleanser. For these types of jobs, we'd suggest making the powder into a paste. Then let it sit on the surface for a minute, before giving it a scrub then rinsing completely. Also, work over a small area at first, other than the whole area at once.
Other Wheel Types
Paint Coated - Bar Keepers Friend is not recommend on painted surfaces so we would steer clear here. Check with the manufacturer for best cleaning practices.
Powder Coated/Matte - Not generally recommended, however some customers have had success. Check with the manufacturer prior.
Chrome Plated - Also, quite susceptible to damage. Test in a small area first, only using MORE Spray and a soft or microfibre cloth.
Plastic Hubcaps - Bar Keepers Friend is not generally recommended on plastic, however some customers have had success. If you do decide to have a go, test in a small area first and only use the MORE Spray & Foam with a soft cloth.
